A Nutritionist is able to consider any medical problems or risk factors in health that are consequential to an eating disorder.

It is important to educate those at risk that when the body is malnourished it ‘shuts down’ the body systems that are not vital for survival. The body can go into a state of ‘stress’ which leads to decline in overall health, mood, immune function, growth and development, gastro-intestinal (GI) function, cognitive ability, hair and nail health just to name a few.

A nutritionist can support eating disorder recovery by promoting dietary changes that are sustainable and providing positive reinforcement through understanding of nutrition, improving health at the individuals own pace.

The new NICE guidance published May 2017 states the importance of dietary advice as part of a multidisciplinary approach to treating eating disorders.

Nutritionists can develop plans or goals for an individual to help gradually re-introduce healthy and regular eating.
