On Thursday 5th- Friday 6th October, Rewrite Your Story and Therapy Partners founder Alan attended a workshop, Narrative Therapy in wonderland: another possible version of narrative family and community therapy? Organised by IFT (the Institute of Family Therapy)

The workshop, run by David Epston and Kay Ingamells, introduced a new approach to narrative family and community therapy.

David is the co-director of the Family Therapy Centre in Auckland, New Zealand, Visiting Professor at the John F. Kennedy University, an honorary clinical lecturer in the Department of Social Work, University of Melbourne, and an affiliate faculty member in the Ph.D program in Couple and Family Therapy at North Dakota State University. Epston and his late friend and colleague Michael White are known as originators of narrative therapy.

Kay, a full member of the New Zealand Association of Counsellors (NZAC) and the Aotearoa New Zealand Association of Social Workers (ANZASW). Is a trained family therapist, child therapist and Journey Practitioner, and has been trained by and worked with David since 2003.

The workshop demonstrated how the approach engages with the problems and concerns of young people and their families and communities, systematically demonstrated through ‘mapping its practices’, videos, transcript interviews and live demonstrations. It was a wonderful chance to explore a differing method of family therapy and a fantastic opportunity to meet pioneers in this field.
